Event Details

Dorothy Wong will teach us how to use textiles and embroidery to craft a unique cover for our favourite books! Come with a book in mind. All supplies are provided.

To Dorothy Wong, sewing is “souling.” As a multidisciplinary textile artist, Dorothy’s journey with needle and thread began in Scandinavia, where embroidery became a form of meditation and healing. The intensity of the labor-intensive, hand-crafted process reflects the hyper-intensity of her home city, Hong Kong. Since then, her practice has expanded to other textile mediums, including felting, knitting, crocheting, and visible mending. These techniques form a language of resistance and repair: material ways of thinking through her nomadic, migrant experience, her relationship to the places she inhabits, and her evolving identity shaped by intersectionality.

Beyond her studio practice, Dorothy is also an art worker and educator. She has led embroidery and mending workshops in Hong Kong, Sweden, and Canada; worked at the Textile Museum of Canada; and engaged in community arts that connect her with diverse communities.
